Participants with Cochlear Implants Wanted for Music Study

We are seeking participants for a study about cochlear implants (CI) users implanted prior to age 18, who enjoyed music-making in junior high and/or high school.

The Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Iowa is conducting a study to understand more fully what has helped some young CIs users to participate actively and successfully in music-making experiences, despite the limitations of CIs for music. Music activities could include a variety of experiences such as taking music lessons, playing, or singing in ensembles, or jamming with friends, etc. We hope your experiences (or those of your child) might help us develop more effective educational and habilitation programs for future CI users.

Who should participate?

  • People who were implanted with a CI prior to age 18

  • People who are now at least 18 years old

  • People who were actively involved in and enjoyed making music (lessons, ensembles, making music with friends) for at least 3 years during junior high and/or high school.

  • OR parents of musically active pediatric CI users

What is required to participate?

  • Participants will be sent via email a questionnaire that includes questions about your (or your child’s) hearing history (age of hearing loss, age of implantation) and your (child’s) involvement in music while growing up (such as music lessons, music ensembles, jamming with friends, etc.).

  • You will be asked to describe your (child’s) experiences making music. There are no right or wrong answers. Just share your (child’s) experiences with music, including things that helped, or hindered music involvement.

  • The questionnaire takes about one hour to complete. Everything is done through electronic communication. No clinic visit is required.

  • Participants receive $25.00 in compensation for taking part in this study.

  • We will keep your answers confidential

How can you get involved?

Send an email to Kate Gfeller at kay-gfeller@uiowa.edu to let us know that you are interested in participating.
